April 1854

Sat 15         Fin weather. Two were drifting
in the bank two were cutting down
bed rock. We got gold at Rich bar
diggins 8$ all the gold we got this
week was 39 1/2$ and up at our
old place John & two hired men
four days each got gold 39$. It
took 24 1/2 dolls to pay the men off.

Sun 16       After arranging our affa
irs at rich bar diggins five
of us started up slate moun
tain for our cabin & divided
our gold. Took dinner. Examind
our diggins & then went down
to the point. I held the Smith
to sharpen four picks. Paid
him 3$ for out two shears & pain
Thompson 100$ on our last falls
provisions. Then went back to
my cabin & shoulderd ham of
bacon & a wallet equal in weight
& then for our Rich bar diggins
in company with John & Dobson.

April 1854

We arrivd dusk at dark, took
supper on beef & soop. My lesson
st. Luke, the unjust stuart – – –
Well I am now ready to take a little
e rest. John has fixed our bunk
and turnd in as we will sleep to
gether down here.

Mo 17         Warm & hazy. The company all
present after breckfast five in all.
Old Gottshall said was no use for
all of us to work on a 30 ft claim &
prospect the hill for these that had
pleanty of ground, as some men
had dumpd our 60 ft down near
the river, so I told Gottshall that
if he would make me whole
that I & John would with draw
& I would loose my work it was
agreed to After dinner we set
tled our affairs. Johon & I rolld
up two pair of blankets each &
he with a pick & hand saw & I with
shovel & hatchett. We started up
slate mountains for our cabin
we rested 4 times before we reachd
the top, it was very warm this evening
