July 55

Th 26          after working hard all day
we got gold 66$ cleand up bed
rock & then the boxes. I finishd
my 20h letter to my wife. after
supper john & Rositer went down
to the point & maild it letter
& I am all a lone of the once
great mountain company maki
ng these little entrys, not a voice
to be heard except the screeching of a
grass hopper, the wind blowing
softly throug the tops of the tall pines

LETTER 29th

Fr 27            I am at a loss to know what
to note down it is every day alike
except some days we dont get gold
as was the case to day, well we
were fixing to work the diggins
shaw & Lawrance came to us sto
pd a while, did not say they wan
ted anything. we cut down a pine
tree to keep it from falling on
our hose as we have the roots
to moove, I think we will get the
stump out to morrow & one by the side of it

July 55

Sat 28        we have nothing to detain
us from work except cooking
besides the enjoyment of making
a good days work as is sometimes
the case. so we shove our selves to
the diggins & try & keep up the exci
tement. we cuddeeded in getting one
stump out by noon & the other down
after dinner I felt moore like taki
ng rest. but that wont pay, we we
cut & dug the dirt off & rolld out
the large stump & cleand up the
boxes & quit got gold 76$ John ma
de pan cakes had syrp & tea for super

Su 29          after Breckfast we three went
up tho pike ditch & cleand out the
head of it, we next divided our
gold dust. Rositers 1/4 amountd
to 65$ & our 3/4 to 195$ at 17$40cts per
oz we took 3 axes to grind & 2 picks
to have sharpd cost 1 1/2$ & got
20lb potatoes for 2$ & paid 1 1/2$
for washing 2 shirts each
for me & John
