March 1854

Sun 5          Some wood. I sent John down to
the point to see if there was any letters
none. He ground the hatchet. I made
a wooden soup spoon to lift our
beans when cookd. We allways
divide out gold on Sundays each
one got 56$ to or weeks work. My
lesson 5 chat Ephesians. We are all
setting around our cabin fire. The
Johns reading novels & I penning fown
& the snow hip deep & solid enough to bare.

Mo 6            Quite cold this morning a good
deal of ice about our boxes. We got
to work after punching some of the
ice off. Made 37 1/2$. The day was
pleasant enough. Supper over &
John writing a letter to his ma.

Tu 7             Not so cold this morning. Verry
warm & pleasant all day. We got
gold 12 1/2$ & Ive been thinking abo
ut wife coming out to Cal & I look
some times if she aint about. So
me times at the cabin & while
at work I look up to see her. no. no.

We 8            Delight full day. The green flies
are flying about & the snow deep.

March 1854

We got gold 47$. We are in good
spirits about our diggin. Weve scear
caly made a beginning to work them.
I do wish my wife was out here to see
the lumps of from 10 to 30$ peices.

Th 9             A beautifull warm April is melting
fast. Allready the ground is making
its appearance in spots & close
by it is 2 & 3 ft deep. We was gr
ound sloosing to day did not try
to get gold.

Fr 10           Warm. The snow melting off
the cabin all kt last. The south
wind blowing. Warm & pleasant
till noon & after clowded up & rand.
We were fixing to wash in the fore
noon & I mended two broken boxes.
We cut a tree down in the after noon
& then knocked off on act of the rain.

Sat 11         Snowd last kt & all day. We workd
at ground sloosing part of the day.
The place we are at work at is about 20 ft
deep & the dirt & mud keeps sliding
down. Each one got 33$ to his shear
this week.
